Romanesque church · Olleros de Pisuerga, Aguilar de Campoo
A church carved into the rock on the edge of Olleros de Pisuerga, in the municipality of Aguilar de Campoo. From outside you only see a small porch; inside, two naves and apses are hewn from the stone on the plan of a Romanesque church.
The church of Santos Justo y Pastor is the parish church of Olleros de Pisuerga, a hamlet belonging to Aguilar de Campoo, and it is cut into the rock just outside the village. From outside you would barely notice it: all that shows is a small porch added in modern times. It is one of the most striking artificial caves in the area.
Inside, the rock has been shaped like a stone Romanesque church: two naves with barrel vaults and apses with half-dome vaults. There is also a sacristy, thought to be the oldest part, and a funerary chapel with a body-shaped (anthropomorphic) grave like others found nearby.
People have lived in this landscape for a very long time, with caves occupied since prehistory, and the church sits at the foot of Monte Cildá.
Visits are run by the Fundación Nartex (artepalencia.es), and the church closes for part of the winter. Check their opening times and admission before you go.
