Santa María de Redondo

Fuente Cobre Trail (Source of the Pisuerga)

The Fuente Cobre Trail is a 13 km circular route with 400 m of climbing, taking about 4 hours 30 minutes, from Santa María de Redondo in La Pernía up the Redondos valley to the Cueva del Cobre, traditionally held to be the source of the River Pisuerga. It is one of the most popular walks in the Montaña Palentina and is rated moderate.

The reward

The mouth of the Cueva del Cobre cave on the southern flank of the Peñalabra range, where the Pisuerga rises. Only the entrance chamber can be visited.

The walk

The walk starts from the car park on the edge of Santa María de Redondo. Follow the main dirt track into the Redondos valley alongside the young Pisuerga, ignoring the old mining spurs and the field entrances. You cross a cattle grid and carry on between small meadows hemmed in by oak and beech slopes.

After crossing the Peñalba stream on a footbridge, take the left-hand track at the first junction, through tall broom, and into oak woodland along an old cart road. There are stretches under holly and another footbridge before you reach a clearing by an old shepherds' hut. From there, a signposted path leads to the Fuente or Cueva del Cobre. Inside, don't go beyond the daylight zone unless you have caving experience and equipment.

On the way back, retrace your steps to the hut and follow an almost level 1.5 km stretch through the forest, where you will spot millstones that were carved on the hillside for centuries. You come out onto an open slope with views, cross another footbridge and reach the Colla Cobre meadow, where on a clear day you can see the Picos de Europa. A track down through the oak wood takes you back to the outward path and the car park.
