Viewpoint · Piedrasluengas, La Pernía
A wooden viewpoint at the top of the Piedrasluengas pass (1,355 m) in La Pernía, on the road from Cervera de Pisuerga to Potes. It looks out over the Liébana valley, Peña Labra, Cuchillón and Pico Tres Mares, with the Picos de Europa beyond.
The Piedrasluengas viewpoint sits at the top of the pass of the same name, next to the village of Piedrasluengas in the municipality of La Pernía. The pass is about 1,355 metres up, inside the Montaña Palentina Natural Park and a few kilometres from the border with Cantabria.
You reach it by road: the CL-627 climbs from Cervera de Pisuerga and, once in Cantabria, carries on as the CA-184 down to Potes. That makes it a natural stop if you are crossing between the Palencia mountains and Liébana. A side road from the top also heads off to the Polaciones valley.
The viewpoint is a wooden platform looking out over the Cantabrian side. You can see the whole Liébana valley and, closer in, Peña Labra, Cuchillón and Pico Tres Mares, with the Picos de Europa on the skyline. Below the pass there is dense beech woodland.
The pass is also the usual starting point for walking up Peña Labra (2,018 m). Weather changes quickly at this height and mist can hide the view, so it is worth checking the forecast; on a clear day the view reaches all the way to the Picos de Europa.
